GLOBENET GLOSSARYBrT: Brasil Telecom S/A; one of Brazil's largest full-service telecommunications providers.
BU: Branching Unit. Submarine electronics unit that allows for connection of spurs to the GlobeNet system.
CLS: Cable Landing Station.
DWDM: Dense-wave division multiplexing. A technique used to transmit several wavelengths of light through a single fiber pair. GlobeNet's system is designed to support 34 wavelengths per fiber pair.
GlobeNet System: GlobeNet submarine cable system (formerly known as the 360 Americas system and as Atlantica-1).
IRU: Indefeasible Right of Use – A 10,15, 20 or 25-year contract to use capacity on a submarine fiber optic system.
MRC: Monthly Recurring charge.
NRC: Non-Recurring charge.
OAM: Operations and Maintenance, provisioned and normally charged on an annual basis to IRU customers.
Provisioning: Installation, testing and project management of a client's circuit from order to RFS.
SDH: Synchronous Digital Hierarchy. CCITT supported international fiber-optic transmission standards. SDH was based on the US SONET standard, thus making SONET a subset of SDH.
Spur: A single branch connected to a ring based system to link stations with smaller bandwidth requirements.
Wavelengths:
An aggregate channel derived from WDM/DWDM services that are not multiplexed down to sub-rate speeds. The standard wavelengths are 2.5 and 10 gigabit.
